“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11
I would wager that for many of you, these words are exactly why you are reading this today. Maybe not these words specifically, but this idea is why you are taking the time out of your hectic schedule to read a blog about Jesus. You are weary. Worn out. Burnt out. Carrying the world on your back. You need rest. You can’t do it on your own.
In just this last month I’ve had several people in my office who have told me as much.
One woman came in and said, “I started coming to Canyon Springs because my marriage was falling apart. I couldn’t do it on my own anymore.” She was weary, beaten up, defeated. She needed rest. So she came to Jesus.
One man said, “I started coming because my health failed. I was going my own way and then this happened.” He was weary, burdened, overwhelmed. He needed rest. So he came to Jesus.
I want you to notice something about Jesus words. He doesn’t say, “Oh, sure, now come to me. Now that you are weary and burdened you come to me. Look who’s come crawling back when the going got tough. Look who’s putting their check in the offering now.” I have had so many people tell me that they came back to God because their life was falling apart and they feel guilty saying it. “I know I should have come back a long time ago, but it took this situation to get me back in the door.” There is no shame in coming to Jesus when times are tough, when life has thrown you a curve ball, when the trials you are going through have brought you to your knees. This is exactly the time when Jesus says,
“come to me.”
And what are the pre-requisites for someone to be able to take advantage of this rest? Jesus says come to me but who should come? All who are weary and burdened. Those are the only qualifications you need. Are you weary and burdened today? Good. Come to Jesus. Are you exhausted, worn out, stressed out? Great. Come to Jesus.
Jesus doesn’t say, “Come to me those who have it all figured out. Come to me those who don’t need any help. Come to me all the perfect people.” If that were the case, who would come? I’ll tell you: no one.
Let me ask you again: are you weary and burdened? Me too. That’s ok. Come to Jesus.
